OLERAI HOUSE

Just two hours drive from Nairobi, the Sirocco Wildlife Sanctuary is the perfect escape for romantic weekends, a few stolen days to decompress from city life, or fun-filled breaks with the kids. Our best known retreat is Olerai House, a charming home-from-home that accommodates a maximum of twelve adults. This delightfully rambling converted farmhouse has six en-suite bedrooms that can be rented apiece on a B&B basis, or exclusively as an entire house with a minimum two-night stay on a self-catering basis. Extra beds are available for children so that the entire family can enjoy the gentle rhythm of country life.

The central living area has a charming sitting room with fireplace, dining room, and library, that looks out across an expansive flower garden where meals are taken under giant "yellow fever" trees. The breakfasts at Olerai are legendary, with homemade granola, yogurt and scones, fresh fruit, juices, honey from our apiary and freshly baked treats. Hot breakfasts and other delicious farm-to-table specials for lunch or dinner can be ordered 24 hours in advance from our Farm Kitchen, with payment made via mpesa. We have both omnivorous and plant-based options available, as we take great delight in conjuring delicious combinations of freshly picked produce from our bountiful organic garden.

THE DAIRY

IMG_6908_edited_edited.jpg

We have several self-catering houses scattered around the Sanctuary, available to rent for a minimum two-night stay. The largest is The Dairy that can sleep six adults. The centrepiece of the house is a beautiful pink-brick barn with high ceilings and stable-doors through which our ponies love to poke their heads. This contains an open-plan kitchen, dining and sitting room, with a cosy wood-fire in the evenings.  On either side of the barn are two beautifully furnished ensuite bedrooms, with large windows that look out across the Sanctuary. A charming loft-room upstairs has a double bed, en suite loo, and veranda.

The Dairy has its own housekeeper, a few basic condiments in the kitchen, and a complimentary breakfast hamper for your enjoyment. Guests are encouraged to bring all other supplies for their meals, and a cook can be hired on a daily basis.  A kikapu of fresh vegetables can be bought daily from the organic farm garden, dependent on season and availability, or you can order direct from Ecoscapes - an expansive organic farm that's just down the road. For those that prefer not to cook, delicious farm-to-table specials can be ordered 24 hours in advance from our on-site "Farm Kitchen".

THE STUDIO

IMG_6872_edited_edited_edited_edited.jpg

The Studio is an exquisite two bedroom self-catering rental, ideal for a family or small groups of friends that want a little privacy and independence during their stay in the Sanctuary. It was once the art studio of French sculptress, Giselle Bunau-Varilla, the last protégée and muse of artist, Auguste Rodin.

The Studio has two cosy bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, a bright airy sitting and dining area, and an open kitchen equipped with all you will need to self-cater, including a stove and a fridge-freezer. The Studio’s double doors open out to a wide, shaded terrace with its own table and sun loungers, in a private flower garden beyond which are the short-grass plains full of wildlife.

As with all of our self-catering houses, The Studio has its own housekeeper, basic condiments for your use in the kitchen, and a complimentary breakfast hamper.  A cook can be hired on a daily basis but guests are required to bring all the supplies needed for their meals. For those that prefer not to cook, daily specials - both plant-based and omnivorous - are available from our Farm Kitchen if ordered 24 hours in advance.  Depending on season and availability, you can also purchase a kikapu of fresh vegetables from the organic garden, or buy direct from Ecoscapes down the road. Extra beds are available for children.

TINGA TINGA

Recently refurbished, Tinga Tinga is our latest self-catering house on offer, that sleeps four people in total.  Located close to the horse stables and Sirocco House, this adorable two-storey cottage has two bedrooms upstairs with a shared washroom and loo.  Downstairs is the main bathroom with shower, a cosy kitchen with fridge and cooker, dining area, and spacious sitting room. The living rooms open out on to a charming verandah and flower garden.

Tinga Tinga has its own housekeeper, basic condiments for use in the kitchen, and a complimentary breakfast hamper for guests to enjoy.  Farm-to-table specials are available from our Farm Kitchen - for those that don't want to cook - if ordered 24 hours in advance.  Depending on season and availability, fresh vegetables can be purchased from our organic garden, or bought direct from Ecoscapes, an expansive biodynamic farm just down the road. Guests are encouraged to bring all their own supplies, and a cook can be hired by the day.

THE FARM KITCHEN

IMG_6885_edited_edited.jpg

Our farm-to-table cuisine is known fondly as Mama One's "Afro-Italo bush-fusion" - gleaned with love from the personal recipes of our matriarch, Oria Douglas-Hamilton. Her unique recipes and combinations of flavour are renown across Kenya, as is her expansive organic garden that's worth a visit or two.

To enhance your stay - be it self-catering or bed & breakfast - by taking cooking out of the equation, we offer two daily specials for each meal from our on-site Farm Kitchen. One of the specials is plant-based, while the other is omnivorous.

Meals should be ordered at least 24 hours in advance and paid for directly by Mpesa.  All of the Sanctuary's resident guests are welcome to enjoy their Farm Kitchen lunch in the flower garden under the giant acacias at Olerai House. However, evening meals are restricted to the privacy of one's rental home.
